Simple things to do at home

School doesn’t start and end at LHES.  Life is a school.  Learning to fish, making change at the store or being a safe hunter or good softball player all requires learning.

Often we forget this as we do things for our kids instead of with them.

There are a number of ways to make life outside of school better so that days in the classroom are more successful:

  • Read to your children, even when they are older.  Any language will do.
  • Work with your child to find the best place in the house to do homework.  Some need a quiet corner while others do better with quiet music (think slack key guitar). Together, figure it out and make that the spot each time.
  • Sleep matters.  All students need at least 8 hours of sleep.  Your job is to make that happen, every night.
  • We are what we eat.  A healthy meal without a lot of sugar is critical to how well a child functions at school.  Watch the soda, juice and sports drinks – they all contain a lot of sugar.
  • Turn off the technology.  Every expert will tell you that a child should have no more than two hours of screen time (TV, Xbox, DS, computer games) a day.
  • Talk story about their school day, your work day, whatever you want.  Ask them what they are reading or what they are doing in math.  If you are interested in school, they will be, too.
